Danakil is the lowest place in Ethiopia. It’s situated in the Afar Triangle and is part of the Great Rift Valley, which runs from Mozambique to Lebanon. From Addis Abeba, the capital you can drive north east to Danakil. Erta Ale, an active volcano, has an active lava lake. The Erta Ale erupted only a few weeks before we arrived. Only a few meters from the lake it is really hot and it smells horrible. Close to the village Ahmed Ela is Dallol, the hottest inhabited place on earth. The average annual temperature is something like 35 degrees. Dallol looks like another world. It’s a volcano with salt springs and geysers, brightly coloured in yellow, brown and green. The smell in Dallol is even worse, but the scenery is beautiful.
