Nepal

Jordan
vrijdag, februari 1st, 2008If you think of Jordan, you think of ancient Petra. Petra is a beautiful historical and archaeological city in Jordan and if you visit Petra, enter the city through the backside, near the monastery. The walk to the backsite is great. But Jordan has a lot more to offer.
We visited the ancient Roman city Jerash, complete with theatres, temples and churches. From Jerash we went down to the extreme high salinity Dead Sea where you can float on the water. We went to Dana national park, where you can walk in a beautiful and not touristic scenery. Visit the castle of Karak. Wadi Rum is a nice way to get acquainted with a desert. The scenery is beautiful and you can get lost into the sandy and rocky desert. In the southern part of Jordan you can visit Aqaba where you can dive into the gulf of Aqaba.
I travelled only 12 days through Jordan in the winter of 2007 with Sawadee. If you want more information about this trip click here.

Suriname
maandag, oktober 1st, 2007Easy going for Dutch people, speaking Dutch in a country in south america. In former Dutch colony Suriname you can.
The best is to use Paramaribo as a base to discover the rest of the country. Near Paramaribo you can visit old slavery plantages, rent a bike in the capital and cycle through the plantages. Take a boat and join an overnight trip across the Suriname river. Visit Brownsberg national park and Brokopondo reservoir. If you have some more time, take a canoe into the jungle. Just before you enter the jungle visit French Guiana and buy a croissant and pay with euros. I took a canoe for 9 days and went across the Marouini river and the Tapanahoni river to Granda Futu, less than 100 kilometers from Brazil.
I travelled 23 days through Suriname in 2007 with Sawadee. If you want more information about this trip click here.

Libya
donderdag, februari 1st, 2007Libya, ruled by Muammar Gaddafi, is a beautiful country which has a lot to offer. More than 90% of the country is covered by the desert. At the coastline you can visit a lot of old Roman cities like Sabratha and Leptis Magna. I think the most beautiful city in the Sahara is Ghadames, which is close to the borders of Algeria and Tunesia. The old white city is build with covered alleyways to protect against the heat. If you go south from Ghadames you will enter Acacus mountains which contain a lot of rock art and a beautiful scenery with a lot of dunes and rocks. In the central part of Libya you can visit the beautiful salt lakes of Ubari where you can rent skis to go down from the sand dunes. The seas of sand dunes near Ubari and the rest of the region Fezzan are so beautiful, it’s like walking through a painting. Sit down on the top of a dune and watch the change of colour and the move of the shadow and enjoy sunset. If you go in the winter don’t forget to take an ice scraper with you, your tent is frozen and just before sunrise the dunes are covered with ice which look beautiful. I travelled 15 days through Libya in the winter of 2006 with Sawadee. If you want more information about this trip click here.

Ethiopia
vrijdag, september 1st, 2006Two beautiful countries in one. Ethiopia is one of my favorites. The northern part is totally different from the southern part. From the capital Addis Ababa you can choose which country you want to visit.
In the northern part you can visit lots of Christian churches hewn from rock. The most famous are in Lalibela, but there are many more in Tigray area. Some are carved out of the ground, some are sculpted into cliffs. It’s like going back to the Middle Ages. Aksum is famous of his stelae, tombs and ruined palaces. Gonder has the Royal Enclosure, which offers a lot of palaces and castles. Don’t forget to visit Bahar Dar, the place near the Blue Nile falls and lake Tana, where you can visit the island monasteries. All these places are situated in the highlands of Ethiopia. If you want to take a closer look at the highlands visit the Simien Mountains which are spectacular. If you are lucky you will meet many gelada baboons.
If you go south of Addis Ababa you will meet the tribes of Ethiopia. There are hundreds of tribes near the Omo river. I visited Mursi (with their famous clay dishes) in Mago National park, beautiful Hamer, Erbore and Borana. During our visit in Turmi, the capital of the Hamer, we were lucky to see the bull jump. The bull jump is a rite of passage for man coming of age which must be done before a man is permitted to marry. Female relatives provoke friends of the “man” to get hit with a twig. The more hits the higher the status of the woman. The “man” has to walk naked across the bulls for four times. The Maza (boys who already passed the bull jump) are responsible for the cattle.
It doesn’t matter which part of Ethiopia you visit, everywhere are beautiful people. I travelled 29 days through Ethiopia in the summer of 2006 with Sawadee. If you want more information about this trip click here.

Mali
donderdag, september 1st, 2005From here to Timbuktu. It sounds like travelling to the end of the world. A lot of people don’t know that Timbuktu exists. They think it is only part of the adventures of Tintin. In the past Timbuktu was a very important trading place where the camel meets the canoe. From the north camel caravans came and went with salt, gold, ivory and slaves and on the other site goods were transported by boats on the river Niger. Nowadays Timbuktu is a dusty place at the end of the desert (or the beginning). If you are lucky you get a stamp of the major in your passport.
Timbuktu is not the only reason to go to Mali. For me Djenné is the most beautiful place in Africa. The town is famous for its mud brick architecture and hosts the biggest mud brick building in the world, the “Great Mosque”, which was build more than 100 years ago. If you visit Djenné don’t forget to go to the market which is in front of the Great Mosque. Bambara, Songhay, Bozo and Fulani people give colour to the market. Djenné is also a good place to start or end a tour with a pirogue to or from Mopti. On your way you can visit small villages and sleep on the banks of the Bani river. One of the highlights of Mopti is the harbour. From Mopti you can easily go to Dogon country. The Dogon area is marked by a sandstone cliff which is more than 150 kilometers long and up to 300 meters high and starts near the city Bandiagara. It is a fantastic area for a multi day trekking. Visit and stay in Dogon villages like Djiguibombo, Kani Kambole, Teli, Ende, Begnetowo, Dourou, Nombori and Tireli. I travelled 22 days through Mali in the summer of 2005 with Sawadee.
