For 16 days to the northern part of the country to see some wildlife and for a trekking of 7 days through the crater highlands of the Ngorongoro conservation area. For the first time I arrived in Sub-Saharan Africa and it felt like going home. On our way to Ngorongoro we visited the nice village Mto wa Mbu and Arusha national park. In the park we walked a safari where we were followed by a giraffe family and met a lot of baboons and buffalos. We visited Tarangire national park and Manyara national park where we met some other wildlife like lots of elephants and gazelles. With a 4×4 we drove through the Ngorongoro crater, which is a beautiful wildlife paradise where you can see lots of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, black rhinos, hippos, lions, buffalos, elephants and lots of other species. Our trekking started from the crater rim through the highlands. Passing the village Nainokanoka, sleeping on the rim of Empakai crater, staying in the village of Naiyobi and finally walking to lake Natron where we met lots of Flamengos. The highlight of the trekking was climbing to the top of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, “The Mountain of God” for the Maasai. We started around midnight and it took us 6 hours to climb around 1700 meters to the top at 2980 meters. The trail was extremely steep and when the sun rose I realised that it was to steep for me, but I had to go back… two porters took me down. My legs where shaking and I didn’t have time to enjoy the wonderful view of the Great Rift Valley…
