Every year the Dipo ceremony takes place in the southern part of Ghana. This ritual is performed by the Krobo people. The girls undergo various purification rituals. A part of their hair is shaved off. To ensure silence they get a leaf between their lips and they walk to the sacred stone Tekpete for a small ceremony. Afterwards the girls are not allowed to touch the ground. They are carried back to the Dipo house. That’s the place where the last part of their hair is shaved off. They discard the leaf, receive blessings and sing and dance to celebrate their womanhood.
